Rakhi is a festival, relationship between brother and sister. It is undoubtedly one of the most important cultural festivals in India. It is the day stand for affection and love between siblings. This beautiful day is celebrated when goddess lakshmi tied a rakhi onto the wrist of king bali and making her brother. As per the hindu calendar that day celebrated was on the full moon day ‘Shravan paurnima’ that is comes of the shravan month.

This festival is popular for celebrating relationship between brother and sister and also man and woman who are biologically unrelated. This day is also known as Rakhi purnima and observed by jains, hindus and many Sikhs. The meaning of raksha bandhan is the ‘knot of protection’. Raksha means protection and bandhan means knot so Raksha bandhan means knot of protection. This festival has a long standing Indian heritage. The reason behind the celebration of this day is that brother should take the responsibility to protect his sister.

The symbol of rakhi is elegance and royalty. Sister’s rakhi on the brother hand implies that the she is binding happiness, love and royalty to him. As per the hindu calendar, every year this festival is celebrated on the shravan poornima. It is very auspicious occasion to ever-lasting bond of respect, love and care between sisters and brothers. This festival conveys the well-being, righteousness and harmony among all kinds of society. Celebration of rakhi is a form of security, amity and morality. Therefore it is one of the most important festival.

Raksha bandhan is also known as rakhi purnima. Rakhi purnima is also known as kajri navami or kajri purnima in northern India. It is also called cocounut full moon or nariyal purnima in the western state. Rakhsha bandhan is also known by the punya pradayak and vish tarak.

On the special occasion of Raksha bandhan, sister ties a rakhi on the wrist of brother. And in return, the brother gives her gift and take the responsibility to protect her.. According to mythological, Rakhi festival was intended to do the worship of God Varuna. Myths describe that ritual observed by Yamuna and indrani for their lovable brother’s yama and indras. According to the Bhavishya Puran the raksha bandhan was basically meant for kings. In the new tradition of tying rakhi start from the historical ages.  The feeling behind the tie rakhi is that the brother should become prosperous and take the liability to care for her.

According to hindu mythology, on this day God Ganesh and deity saraswati reach the earth and both the siblings got benefit from the custom to big extent. The festival rakhi is celebrated every year to the reduction of give and take account between the siblings. In fact this is an opportunity for both brother and sister to reduce the take and give account. Therefore, they both take the advantage of this opportunity.


After the use of rakhi it is thrown out therefore in a way it is ludicrous of the holy symbol. Many stories have been passed that specify the origin of Raksha bandhan. One of them is the wife of the pandava brothers, draupadi tearing a piece of her sari to cover the wound and the tying it around the hand of lord Krishna. Because when the fighting with shishupala lord Krishna hurt his hand. And in the return for her kindness, Lord Krishna asked what she would like. And then draupadi replied to lord that she only most wanted his marvelous presence at every moment of life. And for that moment, Lord Krishna told draupadi that whenever she called out for him he would be with her. After some time, kauravas tried to strip off her in their court, and that time she called to lord Krishna to save her. And in the arrival, lord Krishna gave her a sari that was substantially long and kauravas was unable to undress her and draupadi was saved from being dishonored.

Despite the fact that festival is typically celebrate that the relationship between brother and sister. It has a much religious importance. It is more sacred emotion in the sister. Those who have embarked on the magical journey of life on the way to the spirit understanding not just success and happiness and also an inimitable sense of peace that the whole world can not disturb. Like all other Indian festival, Raksha bandhan is call to divine self within. This is the day to commit ourselves dedicating action to self-betterment, emotions and harboring developing the clarity to see it permanent.
Rakhi like rituals, there is no doubt. The festival of raksha bandhan symbolizes all kinds of protection and good from immorality forces. In the great epic Mahabharata, describe that the lord Krishna advising yudhishtthir to tie the rakhi to guard himself against awaiting evils.

In the earliest scriptures, it is said that the king bali’s iron grip had been the rakhi. And that time while rakhi tying this rhyme is really recited. So that the festival facilitate us a selection of many societal strains.

Strong bond that is represented by rakhi has resulted in numerous political ties among princely states and kingdoms. Indian history testify that the maratha and rajput queens have sent rakhi to the mughal kings who, in the face of their differences have their sister by offering help and protect her.
The lunar asterism that shravan is present if on the full moon day of shravan. It is a ritual which means one resume teaching and learning after a long time. It is preferred as upakarma and upakaran etc. It is great day because it is really teach the lesson of love between brother and sister. Brother and sister both are celebrating this day as a full of happiness and joy. After tying the rakhi on the wrist of brother, sister expects her protection from her brother. And brother also take the responsibility to protect his sister.
